    The Herringbone pattern

Herringbone is making a resurgence in modern housing. It’s a pattern in flooring that has now been around since Roman times, before arriving in France in the 16th century. From there it appeared in parquet flooring design in England and the US around the 1930’s.

Today they are a popular choice in housing, mainly due to its architectural appeal and obvious aesthetic charm, yet also for creating an illusion of space. Herringbone floors can make rooms feel larger, making it a particularly good choice for hallways, entranceway or smaller rooms where the pattern runs the entire length of the room.

Yet herringbone design can often be confused with chevron, and while the 2 patterns are similar in concept, on closer inspection there is a noticeable difference.

Herringbone pieces are rectangular in shape and are interlocked at a 90-degree angle, whereas chevron boards are typically cut at a 90-degree angle and fitted together at a point.

Woodland Lifestyle cater for both styles, with Metroflor Herringbone championing the herringbone style and Zenku Artec offering chevron. Metroflor Herringbone is not limited to a single herringbone pattern, it can also be configured in double and triple styles.

Incorporating these complex patterns into modern living spaces with laminate flooring is a much easier process than solid flooring due to easy installation and maintenance.

While both styles offer a timeless traditional look, they are also becoming more widespread in ultra-modern or architecturally designed houses due to their distinctive visual impact.
